Many television shows follow usually follow a predictable routine. In the early stages of a sitcom a conflict arises, characters attempt to deal with it and by the end the status quo is returned for next week's episode. But even the more form breaking shows in the science fiction and fantasy genres with a clear story arc over a season follow a fairly traceable pattern. The points made will require examples from actual shows and therefore beware of spoilers.
World Building
The first season in most fantasy shows ultimately ends up being weaker than what follows because it is the season with the broadest appeal. Writers and actors are still trying to get to know their characters and settings as much as possible. Importantly though, by the end of the first season viewers know what kind of world the show takes place in, what threatens it, what's can possibly happen in it. In Buffy the Vampire Slayer the first season is devoted to explaining to the viewer that vampires and demons exist and that one girl is imbued with the strength and speed to fight them, in True Blood the audience learns that vampires exist in normal society and many want to assimilate peacefully.
